Developing critical reading skills of primary scientific literature is a foundational practice for scientific literacy. In this workshop, we will use a combined format (data presentation, application, & discussion) to present data that informed development of a 5-step reading approach and its impact on student learning in a large second year classroom. Participants will have the opportunity to apply the reading approach to a paper of their choosing. This will be of interest to instructors who are seeking teaching approaches that facilitate reading comprehension and to students who wish to enhance their reading skills.

In this workshop participants will:
● Consider interview and survey data of student reading approaches that informed the 5-step reading activity
● Evaluate the impact of the 5-step reading approach on a large 200-level classroom
● Review and apply the 5-step reading approach to a primary scientific literature article*
● Discuss general strategies for facilitating student critical reading practices
*Participants may bring in a primary scientific article of their choosing or use a supplied article
