In this workshop, participants will learn about the assessment strategies we have applied to evaluate our student academic success program over the past twelve years, and will be invited to reflect on the considerations and challenges of assessing such activities. SFU’s Academic Enhancement Program (AEP) is a collaborative program developed and delivered by the School of Computing Science (CS) and the Student Learning Commons (SLC). Its goal is to help students succeed in their studies and enhance their overall academic experience by incorporating workshops on ‘learning about learning,’ within their core first-year CS courses. Workshops
and self-reflection activities are tailored to the courses where they take place, and students receive points for their participation, thus making the program an integral part of the course.
We will present key characteristics of the AEP, lead participants through selected activities included in our workshops, and share some of the assessments that we have undertaken and their implications. This session will be of interest to anyone in an instructional role who is exploring the incorporation of student success initiatives in their teaching, as well as considering ways of assessing such activities.
